About this piece
Cardinal Beaufort urges English lords not to trust Gloucester
Summary
This is the first scene of the play. The French wars are over and a peace treaty has been presented to King Henry VI. In exchange of the regions of Anjou and Maine he is given Margaret of Anjou's hand. Gloucester is displeased by the treaty and expresses his outrage. In this monologue Cardinal Beaufort, who dislikes Gloucester, addresses a group of English lords to convince them that Gloucester is dangerous to them all because he has his sights on the English crown, and, being Henry V's brother, he would become the next king if Henry VI died. He urges them not to believe whatever Gloucester tells them
