About this piece

Ishmael introduces himself

Summary

The narrator of story is Ishmael, a young sailor who decides to work on a whaling ship. Together with another man, Queequeg, he boards the ship "Pequod", a whaling ship that is soon to leave port. The ship's captain is Ahab, who has lost a leg in an encounter with a sperm whale and is now determined to find the whale and kill it. This monologue comes right at the beginning of the book. Ishmael introduces himself and tells the reader he has the intention to "get to sea". Whenever he feels "a damp, drizzly November in his soul" he always decides to sail in the ocean and see different parts of the world. He plans to ship as a sailor and not as a passenger even if he will be required to do menial work.
