About this piece
Moritz expresses his frustrations with life
Summary
The story is set in 1891 Germany and deals with the life of three teenagers on the road of self-discovery. They are Wendla Bergman, Melchior Gabor and Moritz Steiffel. They all are approaching puberty and as a consequence their attention is consumed by the metamorphosis of their bodies and their curiosity about sex and relationships. They have problems at school and in their families, who refuse to explain to them what is happening to them. The character delivering the monologue, Moritz, has failed his exams and his father has slapped him declaring him the disgrace of the family. In desperation, he asks Melchior's mother to help him flee to America but she refuses to help. He then runs into the woods with a gun, planning to kill himself. In this monologue, suicidal and alone, Moritz expresses his frustrations, thinking about life, love, his virginity and death.
