Summary

The narrators of the story, which takes place in the early 19th century, are Mr. Lockwood and Mrs. Nelly Dean. In the beginning of the story Mr. Lockwood arrives at Trushcross Grange, a big mansion on the Yorkshire Moors. He is renting it from Heathcliff, a mysterious rich man who lives in the nearby Wuthering Heights. Mrs. Dean is his housekeeper who has been living there for a long time and knows all about the history of the families who lived there. The main story is about the all consuming and passionate love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, a love that creates jealousy, hate and eventually destroys the families. Soon after Lockwood arrives at the mansion, he gets sick and Mrs. Dean helps him get better. Interested about the history of the family who used to live there, he questions Mrs. Dean about it. In this monologues Mrs. Dean tells the story of how Heathcliff was first introduced to the Eanshaws, the family who lived in the mansion. The late Mr. Earnshaw had a son, Hindley, and a daughter, Catherine. One day Mr. Earnshaw leaves for Liverpool and promises to bring back presents for everybody. Instead, he comes back late and shows up with a young gypsy kid who he found on the street, Heathcliff...
