About this piece

Emily tries to explain/justify her polyamorous relationship to her friend Rita

Summary

Emily is a somewhat insecure woman in her twenties who has given up on ever meeting "Prince Charming". She becomes involved in a polyamorous relationship with a cynical slacker. She is thrilled when he invites her to spend Thanksgiving with him, because she thinks this means their relationship is becoming more serious. But when she arrives, she discovers that two of the other guests at Thanksgiving dinner are her lover's other lovers - Jillian, who is only 19 years old, and Claudia, who gets naked on the Internet for money. In this monologue, Emily attempts to explain to her best friend, Rita, the reasons she accepted this situation, even though she wants a more traditional, monogamous relationship.
