About this piece

Their dream gone, Frank Wheeler and April Wheeler blow up in this argument

Summary

Frank Wheeler (Leonardo DiCaprio) and April Wheeler (Kate Winslet) are a young couple with two kids living in Connecticut in the 50s. Frank has a dull office job that he hates and April wants to become an actress but she is abandoning her dream. Trying to find a way out of their frustrations, they decide to leave everything behind and move to Paris. After Frank gets offered a promotion and April gets pregnant, their decision to leave becomes harder and harder... This scene between Frank and April takes place after a lunch with the Givings family, Helen, Howard and their son John. John is mentally unstable and lives in a mental institution. His parents have him meet the Wheelers to help him socialize. John is brutally honest and when he learns that the Wheelers have given up their dream to move to Paris, he makes them see how pathetic their life is. After the Givings leave, Frank and April have an intense confrontation about their dream, their life and their relationship.
