About this piece

The Duchess proposes marriage to Antonio

Summary

The play follows the newly widowed Duchess of Malfi as she falls in love with a man of a lower social class, Antonio, a steward, and their doomed marriage. Against her brother's (Ferdinand) advice she marries Antonio secretly and then the two lovers try to flee. Antonio manages to flee with one of their sons but the Duchess is arrested and later killed. Eventually every main character in the play, the Cardinal and her lover Julia, Bosola (the brother's spy), Ferdinand and Antonio, die at the end. This scene comes right after the Duchess has been advised by her brother and the Cardinal not to marry again. She later meets Antonio and proposes to get married.
