Summary
The play follows the newly widowed Duchess of Malfi as she falls in love with a man of a lower social class, Antonio, a steward, and their doomed marriage. Against her brothers' (Ferdinand and Cardinal) advice she marries Antonio secretly and then the two lovers try to flee. Antonio manages to flee with one of their sons but the Duchess is arrested and later killed. Eventually every main character in the play, the Cardinal and her lover Julia, Bosola (the brother's spy), Ferdinand and Antonio, die at the end. In this scene Ferdinand and Cardinal have just discovered that their sister is pregnant with Antonio's kid. Both react with indignation but Ferdinand's rage gets out of control and the Cardinal tries to get him to reason.
