About this piece
Ray asks Eloise out on a date
Summary
Eloise is a 16 year old girl from Ovid, a small town in Colorado. Her mother died when she was 9 years old and her brother Jed left town a few months later, leaving her with her dad. She now works at the check out line of a supermarket and is dating Ray, a 28 year old who was her brother's friend. The play takes place on a street corner nearby Ovid's bus station where Eloise has been sitting for 3 days while her boyfriend Ray has left town for 3 days without an explanation. Flashbacks narrate her story, her courtship by Ray and her problems in her dysfunctional family. We also learn Ray's back story, how he ended up in jail for 7 years after taking the rap for robbing a jewelry store with Jed. Jed got away and he didn't. Planning revenge, Ray came back to Ovid, but fell in love with Eloise, who doesn't know about his past. In this scene, in a flashback, Ray meets Eloise at the supermarket where she works. They already met a couple of times and this time Ray, after flirting with her and telling stories of him and her brother Jed, asks her out on a date, only to be rejected.
