Summary
This is the first scene of the play. The French wars are over and a peace treaty has been presented to King Henry VI. In exchange of the regions of Anjou and Maine he is given Margaret of Anjou's hand. Gloucester is displeased by the treaty and expresses his outrage. Cardinal Beaufort tells other English lords not to trust Gloucester because he thinks he wants to become the next king of England. In this monologue Salisbury, an English lord, urges York and Warwick not to trust the Cardinal, to side with Gloucester and to unite for the public good.
