About this piece

Colin describes John's character to his wife Evelyn

Summary

The play takes place at Diana and Paul's house. The occasion is a get together of old pals, that include Colin (an old friend of Paul's), Gordon and his wife Marge, John and his wife Evelyn. The main character of the play is Colin, whose fiance´ has recently died and the reason of the party is to cheer him up. The real point of the play, however, is the analyzes of the tense, difficult and problematic lives of Colin's friends. All the characters are unhappy for some reason, Marge wants to have children but is having problems in her relationship, Evelyn is having problems with John and is also sleeping with Paul and Diane knows about it. The characters reveal themselves and the tension grows. Ironically the only one that is satisfied with his life is Colin, who seems to have got over his loss. Colin, having known most of the characters for a long time, analyzes them, giving his blunt opinions on the real reasons they are unhappy. In this monologue he addresses Evelyn, John's wife, who he has just met. He understands she is unhappy and knows that the real reason is John's overbearing personality. John is not present in the room and Colin gives her his honest opinion about him...
