Summary
Marion Post (Gena Rowlands) is an accomplished philosophy professor who decides to take some time off to write a novel. She rents an apartment that is next door to a psychiatrist's office. As the walls are very thin, she can hear everything they say and soon becomes drawn to the stories that one of the patients, Hope (Mia Farrow), tells her psychiatrist. Those stories remind her of her past and she has a mid life crisis as her marriage is getting monotonous and she remembers all her problems with her family, friends and her first husband. Eventually she meets Hope and the two have dinner together. Marion tells her how she regrets never having had a baby and, in this flashback, we see her argue with her first husband, Sam, about the fact that she just had an abortion without telling him....
