About this piece
Master Gunnery Sergeant Hartman "welcomes" the recruits to the Marines training camp
Summary
This war movie is divided into two parts, the first focusing on the hard training of a group of Marine recruits in the United States Marine Corps base at Parris Island and the second focusing on the experience of a few of the recruits that we meet in the first part fighting in the Vietnam war. This scene comes right after the opening scene when the recruits have their heads shaved as they arrive at the training camp. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey), the tough drill instructor, wastes no time initiating the new recruits entering the base training camp into the customs and practices of the military life that awaits them. He walks around their dorm as they are all standing at attention in front of their bunks. He shouts at them, insults them, tells them their are worthless, instructs them on the hard training that awaits them. During his speech he picks several recruits, shouts at them and gives them funny nicknames, Snowball, Joker, Cowboy and Pyle...
